Sarah Jane’s at Edmondson Farm
Hey y’all! I just wanted to give you a little backstory to our flower farm. We began bringing our flowers to the public in small ways in 2020 and have grown little by little each year.
When I was a little girl, I wanted to spend as much time as possible with my four grandparents. My grandparents are/were the best people in the world. I always joke with my children that they have good grandparents, but they ain’t got nothin’ on me. I am forever grateful for the influence they have on my life.
My Grandmother creates gorgeous arrangements and, at the ripe age of 92, is still making arrangements and evergreen Christmas wreaths for her friends and family. She continually gives to her family, church, community and friends. Therefore, she beautifully reaps what she sows. You get what you give.
My grandmother, Sarah Jane, the flower farm’s namesake, is always busy. She is always creating, working and growing things. She is as stubborn as the day is long. She loves everyone and takes care of them with ferocity. She has a temper and gets hot as a firecracker in .2 seconds flat. In her mind, right is right and wrong is wrong. When someone is in the wrong, you stand against it no matter what. Her faith has been tested with so much tragic loss through the years, yet she is a rock. She is full of wisdom. When I call to check on her, she always helps and encourages me instead. I thank God that I take after her and pray I am always strong like her. I love when someone tells me they can see her in me.
She and Granddaddy were a fun, hot mess. When you visited you were fed well and you stayed busy. It was either stay out from being under foot or receive a job from Grandmother. Some of my favorite memories are belly laughing at Granddaddy when I would find him in a chair at the garden. We both knew what he was doing. Staying out and appearing busy. They loved each other well and they don’t make them like my Granddaddy anymore. He was always calm, soft and kind. A perfect balance for Grandmother. They balanced each other and together built a beautiful life.
They were always growing and starting plants. I loved following Granddaddy around the yard with a recycled milk jug full of rainwater getting each plant watered and weeded. He could grow anything and Grandmother could make it beautiful. I loved helping her create Christmas Holly wreaths for what seemed like every citizen in Boaz, Alabama. I loved when she would make a flower arrangement for church. I always thought that was special. She has always had fresh flowers in the house and in the yard. She never misses an opportunity to gift someone with her flowers.
I have always loved arranging flowers with her. Anyone that knows our relationship knows how much I love aggravating her and that was always easy when it came to arranging flowers. She has taught me so much. When I show her arrangements, she analyzes them and shows me where I could have done better. I thank God for an honest, hard working, loving Grandmother. These flowers are a way for me to continue using what she is teaching me and pass it on to my children. Flowers are truly a beautiful thing that always brings us together.
